Reusable grocery bags are a health hazard?

I read a recent article on AZ family, which suggested that reusable grocery bags are a potential health hazard. With the tag line, "Saving the environment could be putting your health at risk," the article quoted from a scare mongering news show which called reusable tote bags, "a breeding ground for a big risk to our health."

The moronic anchor woman, Stacie Delikat  also went on to say that "Most people don't wash their reusable bags."

So - what these morons should have said is, "not washing your reusable bags and then throwing loose meat and vegetables in and leaving the bag in the trunk of your car in 100 degree weather and not washing the food before eating it is a potential health risk."

Do you put a hunk of meat directly into your tote bags? No. Because you are not a moron. Do you put loose vegetables in and then not wash them before eating them? Of course not, because you are not stupid.

Such utter garbage is almost unfathomable to me. What is wrong with these people? I can only assume Stacey Delikat is the niece of the owner of the station. The only vaguely scientific mention was,

"Researchers at the University of Arizona randomly tested dozens of reusable grocery bags and say what they found is a serious threat to public health with 51 percent testing positive for coliform bacteria."

So fucking what? If thousands of people had died from this I could see a headline - but - bacteria at the bottom of a shopping bag? Color me not even slightly surprised. Seriously - if you are going to worry about reusable grocery bags pros and cons, this ain't worth worrying about.  Check the facts first. How many people have died from food poisoning by using a reusable shopping bag?  The environmental good that comes from not creating plastic bags has got to outweigh this ridiculous risk.

This is the news show, and if you want to see a pretty girl with an IQ of a typical grocery bag, go ahead and watch. Good grief!

I doubt people are putting open, raw meat in their reusable bags. However, I would like to mention that I have had packages of raw meat–wrapped–that still leaked juices. If it can happen in plastic bags, it can happen in reusable bags. Maybe that is part of their concern. On a side note, I don't care to put clothes in the same bags that food has been in.

Everyone is entitled to their opinions. Plastic bags may not be perfect, but they are very handy–for groceries, shopping, garbage bags, etc. And those that aren't used can be brought back to the stores and recycled. It's not that hard. Instead of complaining about the plastic bags, perhaps we ought to complain about those who do not recycle…
